D4 Medicals: What You Need to Know

To get a HGV group 2 license or renew an existing one, you need to take a D4 medical exam, which is conducted by a doctor who is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). D4Doctors is a company that provides DVLA medicals at clinics all over the United Kingdom.

How often do I need a HGV / BUS medical?

The frequency of HGV medicals depends on your age

  • Under 45: You need to have a HGV medical after 45th birthday.

  • 45 to 65: You need to have a HGV medical every 5 years, but you can choose to have it every year if you want to.

  • 65 and over: You need to have a HGV medical every year.

How will you know when you need a HGV medical?

You will know when you need a HGV medical when you receive a reminder letter from the DVLA, which will include a D4 medical form. You can also tell when your medical is due by looking at the expiry date on the back of your HGV license. If you need to download a D4 form, you can do so here. CLICK HERE

What is included D4 Medical Assessment.

The medical examination includes the following:

  • Eyesight Test: You must have a visual acuity of at least 0.5 (6/12) in your best eye and at least 0.1 (6/60) in the other eye. This test is used to check your vision and make sure that it meets the required standards for driving vehicles.

  • Blood pressure check: The DVLA requires that your blood pressure is below 179/99 mmHg when you apply for or renew your driving licence. This is to ensure that you are fit to drive safely.

  • Medical history questionnaire: The doctor will ask you about any medical conditions that you have, any medications that you are taking, and any other health concerns that you may have. This questionnaire is used to gather information about your medical history.

What to Bring to Your HGV, Taxi, Driver, or D4 Medical

Here are the things you need to bring to your HGV, taxi, driver, or D4 medical:

  • Your current driving license

  • Your current medical prescription (if you wear glasses or contact lenses)

  • A completed medical history questionnaire (available on www.d4doctors.co)

  • Any other relevant medical documentation (e.g., Any medical history or letters from your doctor about any medical conditions you have)

How long does an HGV medical is valid?
  • You have 4 months to pass your HGV driving test. If you don't pass the driving test within this time, you will need to take the medical exam again.

Where to send  completed HGV medical form?

Doctor will sign the completed D4 form. You must send it to the DVLA, along with your driving license (if you have one) and/or application form.

The DVLA address is:

DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR

Additional tips for your HGV, taxi, driver, or D4 medical:
